Is the Quarter Half Over Already?

Wow, the last five weeks have been a whirlwind. Since August 13th I've been going non-stop trying to first get my room ready for the kids, then planning for the first week, and then finally flying by the seat of my pants every day because it's my first year.

I vowed to do all of these things during my first year teaching, and now I realize that I barely have time to get to bed let alone, keep a journal, work out daily, keep up with this blog and the thousands of other things I promised myself.

When they say that your first year is the hardest they aren't exaggerating. I'm burnt out and I feel as though I'm not doing my best teaching because the bottom line is, this is one of the hardest jobs on the planet. I'm supposed to be effectively meeting the needs of my 30 extremely wonderful students that are one 18 different reading levels, and some don't speak English. And I'm not complaining because the sense of fulfillment I have at the end of the day is overwhelming because of the love I have for my first class. But...I'm exhausted...haha and that's about all I can say.

Monday Made It/Crunch Time!!

Wow! It's crunch time over here in the Williams' house! I start New Teacher Orientation next week!! (Still no word on when I can get into my classroom though o__O!!!!!!) I can't believe that another Monday has come and gone. This will maybe be my last Monday Made it because school starts in three weeks (AHHHHHH!!!!). So I'm linking up with Tara and the Gang over at 4th Grade Frolics!

I cracked open my laminator today and used up the two free pouches it came with! Holy Moly I'm in love!! I think it's the most amazing purchase I've ever made, super easy to use. Step 1: Take it out of the box. Step 2: Plug it in! Step 3: Push the On Button/Wait for the Ready Light. Step 4: Ready to go!

So I found you've been ticketed by the desk police inspiration on Pinterest of course! Originally from Third Grade Love. She's giving away freebies so you should take a look! I love the idea, but I thought they needed to be a little bit smaller and more durable so I could use them over and over again!

 I laminated them as well so students can return them to me. This will allow me to check their desk and make sure they actually cleaned it, but also I can reuse the tickets again and again!

I also started working on some of my storage bins today. I made my own label using photo shop. Here's a blank one if you would like to use it!

And then I wrote on them and used packing tape to put them on the Sterilite bins I bought from Target (Love their college sales btw!)

That's all I've really finished so far, I have a lot of other WIP projects but I'm busy being a mommy to Tyrion. He's a little sick so I've been giving him meds, but thankfully he is on the mend!

August Currently!/Portable woes

Wow! August already...I have 20 days before I meet my kids for the upcoming school year and 24 before the first day of school! I'm starting to panic a little. This year I'm going to be in a portable and the portables are still being set up and adjusted in front of the school building so unfortunately I can't get in their and start setting up yet -___-! I'm panicking just a little...time is slowly slipping away.

I just ordered myself a personal laminator after seeing it on many blogs, I'm eagerly waiting it's arrival so I can get started on laminating my stuff for back to school!

The Creative Teacher is by the same people who brought you the Organized Teacher. It has a lot of great idea for lessons that will both engage the students and promote higher order thinking. It's awesome!

All I have to say is, ever since middle school the glittery BIC mechanical pencils have been a staple in my back to school cart. I must have thousands of them.

New [School] Year Resolutions

So like any teacher, there are definitely things that I KNOW I need to work on to make sure next year goes off without a hitch. However, as a new teacher, I also know that I need to be realistic in my resolutions so not to give myself a panic attack every time something goes wrong. 
Here's an opportunity for me to set my goals in public in attempts at actually keeping them! Amanda over at Teaching Maddeness is hosting a New School Year Resolution linky party where you state resolutions for the upcoming teaching year. So here are mine!
Resolution #1: Don't go bankrupt! This is my first year teaching so of course I'm starting from scratch. I don't have any school supplies in reserves and I need to basically create a learning environment that is conducive and safe within the next two weeks. No pressure right? I swipe my debit card as if I have endless funds even though that is not the case. So, my resolution is to prioritize, do I really NEED those extra packs of sticky notes? Not really, though I do WANT them. 
Resolution #2: Take it a day at a time. I am a serious perfectionist (aren't we all), so when I was doing my student teacher I attempted to be planned almost a week ahead of time. Now I know that is an unrealistic expectation to have for myself now that I'm starting my very first year of teaching. I need to learn to live in the present instead of the future, which is one of my greatest personality flaws. 
Resolution #3: Don't be afraid to ask for help. Last year during my Master's/Student Teaching I almost had a mental breakdown because I was attempting to do everything by myself. I pride myself in my ability to do pretty much everything without asking for help, but sometimes that is not the best policy. This year I'm going to do my best to take it slowly and remember that even though I might feel like I know everything, I definitely don't. 
Resolution #4: Take some time for yourself(myself). Everyone always says that nothing is as stressful as your first year. Well, being on the cusp of my first year, I'm trying to get into the mindset of that being a reality. I'm going to set a time at the beginning of the year and when that time comes, I'm going to walk out of my classroom and go home/the gym/the bfs house, what have you, so I can get a fresh start for the next day.

VistaPrint Madness!

I'll admit (as I have before) I totally thought VistaPrint was a scam. However, that is NOT the case. I know I've already posted a little bit about VistaPrint, but I find myself going back to the website to window shop, and today I bought more stuff. Which is why I was excited when I saw that Christina over at Bunting, Books, and Bainbridge was having a VistaPrint Linky Party!

So first I made, Homework Passes, using the business card template. If you hadn't figured it out already, I love owls! This year I'm going to use personal incentives called "Gator Bucks" because our school mascot is the Alligator. I figured that students can save up 15 of their Gator Bucks and trade it in for a free homework pass. :)

Next I made book labels for my library books, which is pretty self-explanatory :)

And today I made contact Labels to put on the popcorn bags for open house :) I think I'm going to turn them into refrigerator magnets too, so parents have quick access to my information in case they need to contact me!

I'm so happy that I found VistaPrint, because as a teacher it definitely makes my life a little bit cheaper and a little bit easier :) So with that I leave you with a picture of Tyrion all balled up and grumpy!

Monday Made It and a New Family Member

Monday seems to come and go so quickly towards the end of the summer. So I'm linking up with Tara @ Fourth Grade Frolics again for Monday Made It!

Though I haven't really begun to print these things out on card stock to ready myself for next year I still made them in preparation for the upcoming school year. I don't even have my classroom yet and I don't need to cram anymore goodies into my bedroom because I'm already running out of room for myself haha.

ANYWAY Here's what I made for the open house that will be happening in a few weeks. I can't remember where I saw them originally (If you know, could you tell me so I can give proper credit?) I made little signs to put on bags of popcorn for Open House! I'm also going to stick a label on it with all of my information on it for parents to use. 

I also made some student numbers to use for attendance and other classroom management tidbits. They are really basic, which is the way they will stay for this year considering I don't have a theme for my classroom in mind yet and I don't think 3 weeks is enough time to implement one by myself when I'm poor haha. 

Also, I welcomed a new family member this week!! Say hello to Tyrion Alastor Brown (Brown is my bf's last name and we got him together).

 We named him Tyrion after the Game of Thrones character (If you like fantasy and haven't read these books, I highly suggest them) and Alastor after Alastor Moody from Harry Potter (my favorite book series in the world). I'm totally in love with his little prickle butt :)

Back from Vacation/Preparing for School Linky Party

Wow, I've been away for a little while it seems (I miss two whole Monday Made-It's). Well aside from being super busy gearing up for my first year teaching and dealing with some family hiccups, I also went on vacation with my boyfriend. We just went to Ocean City, MD which is not to far away from where we live, but it was a vacation all the same.

When I got back from vacation (and got back on to my working out regiment) I weighed myself and realized I had lost 50 pounds!

I will be teaching fifth grade!

Set a time for when you are going to leave at the end of the day. When that time comes you should be packing up and getting ready to go so you can have a fresh start for the next day!

- Do you have a checklist that you follow when preparing your classroom?

I should/will as soon as I know how big my portable will be and approximately when I can move in!

- What are some must haves in your classroom that you cannot live without (ex. items, books, posters, management strategies)?

Classroom management that makes students accountable for themselves, but also classroom management incentives that help the class learn to collaborate as a whole. Also, some of my childhood favorites as books in the library such as Harry Potter, Super Fudge, and the Bailey School Kids. 

- What is something that all teachers should have in their classroom?

A place that is just theirs, be that their desk or desk chair, something off limits to the students, so they know when you are in this place, they must use another strategy to answer a question they might have.
